$800K in crypto ransom frozen as France sees rise in violent extortion cases

$800K in crypto ransom tied to a France kidnapping case has been frozen, as a new €700K extortion incident points to a rising trend.

$800K in crypto ransom frozen as France sees rise in violent extortion cases

An on-chain investigator has revealed that roughly $800,000 in crypto linked to a high-profile kidnapping case in France was frozen, as new incidents point to a growing trend of violent extortion targeting digital asset holders.

According to ZachXBT, the funds were traced and frozen with assistance from Binance following a 2023 case involving French streamer TeufeurS, whose family member was kidnapped and held for ransom.

In total, approximately $2 million was paid to secure the victim’s release, with a portion later recovered through coordinated blockchain-tracking efforts. Six suspects tied to the incident were subsequently arrested, though details had not been publicly disclosed until now.

Victim confirms recovery, highlights broader concerns

TeufeurS later confirmed the recovery, stating that the frozen funds were “the one good thing about crypto,” while expressing frustration over the broader impact of the incident.

Despite the partial recovery, the victim said the experience led them to exit crypto entirely, citing safety concerns and a perceived lack of deterrence within the justice system.

The comments came in response to reports of a fresh attack in France, where a family was reportedly held captive for several hours while attackers demanded access to crypto wallets.

New case underscores emerging pattern

According to local reports shared on social media, the latest incident occurred on 20 April in Ploudalmézeau, where armed individuals allegedly restrained multiple family members and forced the transfer of approximately €700,000 in cryptocurrency.

Authorities have since launched an investigation, though no arrests have been confirmed at the time of writing.

The method mirrors earlier cases, including the TeufeurS incident, where attackers targeted individuals believed to hold significant digital assets and demanded payment directly to crypto wallets.

Crypto increasingly used in targeted extortion

ZachXBT noted that such cases are becoming more frequent, particularly in France, where several home invasion-style robberies have reportedly involved cryptocurrency demands.

Unlike traditional ransom payments, crypto transactions can be executed quickly and across borders, complicating recovery efforts. However, blockchain transparency has also enabled investigators and exchanges to trace and freeze funds in some cases.

The latest disclosures highlight both sides of that dynamic: while attackers continue to exploit crypto’s accessibility, coordinated tracking efforts have proven capable of limiting losses after the fact.

Final Summary

  • An investigator says $800K in crypto linked to a French kidnapping case was frozen, confirming partial recovery of a $2M ransom.
  • A new €700K extortion case suggests a growing trend of crypto-linked kidnappings, raising concerns over user safety and enforcement.
