Will Coinbase survive rising competition?

COIN stock drops 5% after Q2 revenue miss – Coinbase CEO blames ‘tough market’

Coinbase’s stock, COIN, dropped 5% in after-market hours on Thursday, the 30th of July, following its revenue fall in Q2. The exchange reported total revenue of $1.220B, which was 5% short of the estimated $1.284B.

On a quarterly basis, revenue was down 14% from Q1 and about a 19% decrease from the previous year. Overall, the exchange recorded a net loss of $359M.

Reacting to the revenue miss, COIN traders turned bearish after market hours on the 30th of July, pulling the share value by 5.12% to $155.20.

During the earnings report, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged that the weak performance was due to “tough market conditions in Q2.”

It was a tough market in Q2. Despite this, we continued to execute on the things in our control and build through the noise.

But it was not all gloomy, as the crypto infrastructure firm showed some strength in other key segments in its push for its “everything exchange” vision.

Coinbase resilience vs. Robinhood threat

The exchange reported that it gained global market share in spot and derivative trading volumes.

According to the report, Coinbase’s market share rose to a record high of 10.3%, led by spot crypto. The derivatives market share was mainly driven by crypto perpetuals and pre-IPO perps.

Perhaps the most noteworthy was its prediction markets revenue more than doubling (106% increase) and crossed $100M in annualized basis.

In fact, Robinhood also reported a record surge in prediction market volume and revenue. This underscores how this new narrative is increasingly becoming a crucial lifeline for crypto platforms.

That said, Coinbase’s bet on stablecoins, AI agents via Base, and diversification of revenue beyond trading showed it was still committed to its ‘everything exchange’ vision.

Mounting competition and moat concerns

But it was also facing competition from Robinhood, Hyperliquid, and others that could dent its vision, noted analyst Zack Guzman.

Asked about increasing competition from Robinhood’s own L2 and Hyperliquid, there was really no good answer for any moat Coinbase now has. It’s sad to see Coinbase shrink into a corner.

That said, the crypto market was still stuck in a bear market. It remains to be seen whether a new tide will lift the entire market, including Coinbase.

Throughout 2026, COIN has been swinging between $140 and $210. Whether it will retest the 2026 support again before attempting to push above $200 may depend on the crypto market conditions in H2.
