Coinbase brings 4,000 US stocks to UK users—but they are not tokenized

Coinbase is expanding beyond crypto in Britain with 24/5 access to US stocks. Here is how the service works and what UK investors should know.

Coinbase brings 4,000 US stocks to UK users—but they are not tokenized

Coinbase has expanded beyond cryptocurrency in the UK by launching access to nearly 4,000 US-listed stocks. This allows eligible customers to trade equities alongside digital assets from the same app.

The rollout marks another step in Coinbase’s push towards becoming a broader financial platform. However, investors are buying traditional securities, not blockchain-based or tokenised versions of those stocks.

Coinbase expands its UK trading platform

Eligible UK users can now trade nearly 4,000 US shares on a 24-hour, five-day-a-week schedule.

The service offers commission-free trading and supports fractional shares, allowing investors to buy portions of higher-priced stocks.

Although trading is available around the clock during the business week, order execution depends on the session.

Market orders execute only during normal US market hours between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Outside those hours, customers must use limit orders, reflecting the lower liquidity typically available during extended trading sessions.

Trades settle in US dollars on a T+1 basis.

UK customers can fund their accounts in pounds, although foreign exchange conversion may introduce additional costs despite Coinbase’s zero-commission pricing.

Investors are buying shares—not tokenized assets

Despite Coinbase’s crypto roots, the new service does not offer tokenized equities.

Customers purchase conventional US-listed securities, including eligible fractional shares, through the traditional financial system.

For UK clients, CB Payments Ltd receives and transmits orders to Coinbase Capital Markets, while Apex Clearing Corporation provides execution, clearing, and custody.

The arrangement means the stocks remain subject to conventional securities regulation rather than blockchain settlement.

Coinbase also notes that holders of fractional shares may receive voting rights, transfer rights, and other shareholder benefits on a proportional or more limited basis than owners of whole shares.

What does the launch mean?

The rollout signals Coinbase’s continued expansion beyond digital assets into mainstream investing.

By combining cryptocurrencies, cash balances, and listed equities within a single platform, the company is moving closer to competing with multi-asset investment apps rather than purely crypto exchanges.

At the same time, the launch highlights an important distinction.

Although stocks and cryptocurrencies now appear within the same interface, they continue to operate under different custody, execution, and regulatory frameworks.

For now, Coinbase is integrating traditional finance into its platform—not bringing listed equities onto the blockchain.

Final Summary

  • Coinbase now allows eligible UK customers to trade nearly 4,000 US-listed shares alongside cryptocurrencies through the same app.
  • The new service offers conventional securities rather than tokenised stocks, meaning trades continue to settle through traditional market infrastructure despite Coinbase’s crypto-focused platform.
