Wormhole drops 34%: Are W crypto shorts now overcrowded?

The recovery case exists, but the Funding Rate is asking traders to slow down.

Wormhole [W] declined 34% in the past day as broader market volume surged, according to CoinMarketCap data.

In the spot market, rising volume with falling price usually points to stronger selling momentum. That setup warned that Wormhole’s downtrend could continue in the short term.

However, the perpetual market was telling a slightly different story. The Long/Short Ratio showed which side controlled more perpetual market volume. A reading above 1 suggested buying dominance.

At press time, perpetual market volume had exceeded $1.06 billion over the past 24 hours. The Long/Short Ratio stood at 1.05, showing a moderate bullish tilt. Over the past 4 hours, nearly 51% of market volume also favored bulls.

So, the first split was clear. Spot traders were selling hard, while perpetual traders were not fully bearish yet.

Is W’s Funding Rate warning traders?

The perpetual market still had buying volume, but the deeper positioning looked weaker. The Funding Rate warned of an extreme short bias in the W market.

At press time, the Funding Rate had dropped to around -0.0436% on the chart.

A deeper move below the positive baseline showed that traders were heavily positioned short. This reading covered the past 24 hours and pointed to aggressive bearish exposure.

At the same time, capital in the perpetual market was shrinking. CoinGlass data showed that Open Interest fell more than 48% to $71.47 million at press time.

Falling Open Interest during a price decline usually means traders are exiting positions or reducing exposure.

In Wormhole’s case, that made the bearish setup more fragile. Shorts were crowded, but capital was also leaving the market. That mix can deepen losses if sellers keep control.

Can W crypto sentiment survive the sell-off?

Market Sentiment remained slightly bullish despite the sharp decline. The Sentiment metric, which tracks investors’ outlook, stood at 1.89 on the chart. The metric ranges from -10 to 10, so the reading still showed a positive bias.

However, the direction had weakened. On the 12th of October, Sentiment had reached 4.09. The latest reading showed that bullish expectations had cooled sharply.

At the moment, positive Sentiment suggested that traders could still return to bullish positions. Even so, the Funding Rate and Open Interest data called for caution.

Wormhole’s market is now caught between two readings. Traders still see recovery potential, but shorts control the immediate pressure.

Final Summary

  • Wormhole [W] declined 34% as spot selling pressure increased.
  • The Long/Short Ratio stayed mildly bullish at 1.05 despite the sell-off. Funding Rate fell to -0.0436%, while Open Interest dropped 48% to $71.47 million.
