Bitcoin wallet moves $378M in BTC held since March 2020

A major holder redistributed Bitcoin valued at nearly $378 million, while a small 2024 payment complicates the dormant-wallet narrative.

Bitcoin wallet moves $378M in BTC held since March 2020

On October 12, a Bitcoin wallet that held most of its balance since March 2020 transferred about 4,582 BTC, with Lookonchain identifying the movement of assets and reporting them to be worth about $377.58 million.

Why were so many coins transferred, and where will they now go? Those are the questions being asked, but we may be seeing a transfer of funds, but not a sale or intention to sell by the holder.

A large balance moves after years in place

That address saw 4581.95 BTC received on March 3, 2020, according to BitInfoCharts. Nine days later, the price of bitcoin began to drop, caused by the outbreak of COVID-19 panic.

The last large outgoing movement from this address on October 12 resulted in almost nothing being left.

This wallet has not been abandoned completely. It shows a small outgoing transfer of 0.009 BTC in August of 2024 and some small incoming transfers, but the bulk of this wallet has remained intact.

If they got them in 2020, this also does not establish the year in which the owner bought them and how much. Any comparison to their then value would be measuring the increase in market value rather than established profits on the investment.

Where the Bitcoin went matters

Five recipient addresses are reportedly shown in the blockchain records. Four received 1,000 BTC, which leaves one recipient ending up with about 582 BTC.

In the supporting information seen, there is no corroboration that the recipient addresses are owners or any evidence of sales.

Having assets moved to a recognizable exchange is more of an indication of having positions built in view of being traded, but even then, a deposit to an exchange does not prove a sale.

Bitcoin rebounds toward $84,000

Bitcoin traded at $83,688 at the time of writing, on an altogether separate note. After recovering slightly past $81,034, it stood 2.25% higher than its daily opening price.

The nearby hurdle sits around the $84,000–$84,200 price range. If it holds above that area, it could bring recent highs near the $86,000–$87,000 price areas into view.

If the rebound fades, around $81,000 is the nearest downside reference, followed by $80,000. Trading continued at the time of this writing, and the chart didn’t show any evidence linking the rebound to the wallet transfer.

Final Summary

  • A wallet moved around 4,582 BTC held largely since March 2020, but no sale is confirmed.
  • Bitcoin rebounded toward $84,000, with $81,000 remaining a nearby downside reference.
