They've now been handed a €3.25 million fine.

Coinbase Ireland faces €3.25M fine over 18-month customer funds shortfall

Coinbase is in trouble with Ireland’s central bank. The exchange has been accused of not keeping enough money aside to cover what it owed customers.

Now there’s a fine to pay.

Coinbase Ireland fined for €3.25M

The penalty was announced by the Central Bank of Ireland on October 22. Coinbase Ireland admitted to breaches that ran from November 2020 to August 2025. They’ve also agreed to a reprimand and a fine of €3,252,618.

The original figure was 30% higher, brought down because the company settled. The High Court is yet to sign off on any of this.

What’s peculiar, is that the crypto bit isn’t Coinbase Ireland’s job at all! It is an e-money firm that serves customers across the European Economic Area. The operations are simple. You give them your euros [or any fiat currency, really], and they give you e-money.

That can be used to purchase crypto through other Coinbase companies.

The problem happened with the account that’s supposed to keep customer money separate. That one fell short every single day from January 1, 2023, to June 27, 2024.

At its worst in 2024, the gap was €5.2 million.

Ireland says Coinbase leaned too hard on its US parent and mixed up customer money

Coinbase Inc. handled much of the work involved in calculating, checking, and transferring the funds Coinbase Ireland was required to safeguard. The Irish side didn’t have enough people with the know-how to check any of it thoroughly.

Money’s been mixed up too. Funds from 30 institutional customers were with Coinbase Inc.’s own cash for about 19 months. Some customers who’d moved over from Coinbase UK also kept sending deposits to the old UK account, up until August 2025.

The regulator also found that Coinbase Ireland had failed to disclose several important changes to its safeguarding arrangements promptly, despite being required to do so.

The clean-up ended this year in June. No one lost money, but it was a close call.

Final Summary

  • The Central Bank of Ireland fined Coinbase Ireland €3.25 million.
  • Its customer-fund account was underfunded daily for about 18 months.
