Crypto CEX volume shrinks to $1.95T – Why are investors backing RWAs?

RWA tokens gained 10% in July while trading and VC activity fell.

The crypto market is slowing down, with little trading and investment activity. However, Real World Asset (RWA) tokens are bucking the trend as one of July’s strongest-performing crypto narratives.

Spot volumes shrink, trading moves to Binance and Bybit

CoinGecko data showed that the top 10 centralized exchanges (CEX) handled $1.95 trillion in spot volume in Q2 2026. That’s a 27.9% fall from $2.70 trillion in Q1.

Monthly volume fell from $900 billion in January and February to $700 billion in March, $600 billion in April, and $619 billion in May. Later, it recovered 12.3% to $695 billion in June.

Binance held 38.7% of the market and Bybit 10%, giving them nearly half of the top-10 volume. MEXC fell 56% and dropped from second to seventh place, while Crypto.com and KuCoin declined 40.9% and 38.5%.

Gate, OKX, Bitget and Kraken gained some share. Lesser chaos explains the slowdown, but uneven losses mean traders are moving towards larger exchanges.

And it’s not just trading activity…

CryptoRank data showed that only 150 unique venture capital firms had participated in crypto funding rounds in July 2026.

That is the lowest monthly count since November 2020 and a massive fall from the record 1,177 investors active in May 2022. Much like spot trading volume, crypto funding is becoming concentrated among fewer players.

RWA tokens moved in the opposite direction

Their median return reached 10% in July. Total RWA on-chain capitalization also went up to a record $32.2 billion on the 14th of July, up 12.3% since the beginning of the month and above its previous April peak.

But does this mean the slowdown is over? Absolutely not.

Instead, capital is becoming selective. Tokenized traditional assets continue to attract interest even during weak activity in every other category, so RWAs at the center of the crypto market narrative in July.

Final Summary

  • Top-10 CEX spot volume fell 27.9%; crypto VC participation dropped to just 150 firms in July.
  • RWA tokens defied the slowdown with a 10% median return.
