Crypto market erases $2T – Is rising leverage masking weak demand?
Fear remained elevated while traders quietly returned to perpetual markets.
Crypto’s market capitalization, excluding stablecoins, entered a difficult phase as liquidity continued leaving the market.
The sector shed roughly $2 trillion, leaving its combined valuation near $1.91 trillion.
The market briefly recovered by 0.96%. However, stablecoin liquidity continued thinning, raising fresh concerns among investors.

Stablecoins act as crypto’s dry powder. Their supply often signals whether capital remains available for a broader market rotation.
Over the past three months, stablecoin market capitalization fell by roughly $16 billion. It stood near $302 billion at press time, close to where it began the year. That decline suggested investors were keeping less capital ready for risk assets. A lasting recovery may require those reserves to rebuild.
Can leverage support crypto’s recovery?
Derivatives data told a different story. Leverage gradually returned across the crypto market after the 1st of August. Between the 1st and 5th of August, liquidations totaled roughly $1.046 billion across long and short positions.
CoinGlass data showed short sellers lost $566.39 million during that period.
Most losses occurred between the 2nd and 5th of August. Liquidations reached $844.09 million, including $525.42 million in short positions.

Open Interest reached $114.93 billion over the past 24 hours, up from $110.19 billion. That increase showed traders were returning to perpetual markets. Even so, rising leverage could amplify either direction.
Why does fear persist?
The Fear and Greed Index fell to 26 at press time, placing the market firmly in fear territory.
The index had remained fearful since the 10th of July. That reading suggested buyers still lacked broad conviction. The Altcoin Season Index printed 46, below the threshold associated with broad altcoin leadership.
Crypto now faced a clear test: whether spot liquidity could catch up with derivatives positioning.

Final Summary
- Crypto’s market capitalization, excluding stablecoins, fell roughly $2 trillion to $1.91 trillion.
- Stablecoin market capitalization declined by $16 billion over three months, reducing available liquidity.
