Crypto mining firm Luxor raises $16M as it expands into AI

Luxor Technology, a company that provides services to Bitcoin miners, has announced a $16 million investment round as it expands its artificial intelligence business.

The funding brings together investors from the trading and mining industries. It also supports Luxor’s plans to apply some of the services it developed for miners to customers seeking computing power for AI.

Mining investors join the AI push

CMT Digital led the round, with Bitcoin mining equipment manufacturers Canaan and MicroBT among the investors. Halo, Steelhead, and several individual investors also participated, according to Luxor’s October 27 announcement.

The $16 million figure is for new investment in Luxor and purchases of existing shares. The company did not say how much each category took, so the entire amount is not fresh cash for expansion.

Its AI hardware desk sources graphics processors and servers for customers, and those processors help run demanding AI tasks. Bitcoin mining, on the other hand, generally relies on machines built specifically for mining.

A business built around computing power

Luxor had started its move into AI before this funding round that was announced. In September, it launched its AI business, using the services it had initially developed for Bitcoin miners into another market.

How these two industries connect is the infrastructure that both of them need. This is because mining and AI businesses both rely on computing equipment, and they need access to electricity. Their hardware and workloads differ, but the core things they need are the same.

Luxor says its mining hardware desk has traded $1 billion worth of specialized machines. It also says its energy business services more than 75 megawatts of electricity demand across two US power markets.

The company also offers contracts linked to the cost of renting computing power.

Bitcoin mining still remains part of the business. Luxor continues to offer a mining pool, software, and other services to miners as it builds its AI operations.

Final Summary

  • Luxor announced a $16 million investment round led by CMT Digital, with Canaan and MicroBT participating.
  • The company wants to expand its AI services along with its existing Bitcoin mining business.
