Ian Balina, a very well noted cryptocurrency investor and YouTube influencer is the next victim of a virtual robbery in the crypto space. According to the latest news, Balina has been robbed of almost $2 million worth of Ethereum during a live stream review related to ICO last night.
He was hosting a live chat review about ICO token sale when he sensed something suspicious. In the middle of streaming, Balina was asked to sign back into Google to save the edits in the spreadsheet he was using. He immediately exited the chat saying, ‘I have to get going’ and ended the stream abruptly.
He then turned to his supporters and followers to seek help to trace the stolen currency worth millions from his Etherscan wallets.
“Crypto Family, I need you now more than ever. I ended today’s live stream b/c I am being hacked. I’m not worried about the money. I learned my lesson. I only care about catching the hacker. Please email any information to email@example.com. Thank you all for the support.”
Just a few days before the taxation period, a hack attack is witnessed which has led to suspicion and speculations that the entire act is a cooked up story to avoid taxes.
Bob Arctor, a Twitterati said:
“Found the hacker – you avoiding taxes. What’s the reward? Since his crypto is “lost” maybe he doesn’t have to disclose his crypto activities to IRS? Let’s see, if he’s an honourable man he will tweet his tax return the same way he flashes his portfolio snapshots: D”
Ryan, a market enthusiast tweeted:
“Seen it so often now, first Trevon James, then data dash lost all of his free Substratum, Philakone supposedly hacked twice, now Ian Ballina for 2 million. It’s all utter BS. The public fall for it hooks line and sinker. They probably also believe security expert Mcafee got hacked.”
“I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. It seems Ian has been the victim of a tragic heist here. But when every twitter and YouTube personality comes up with the same “I’ve been hacked” line it gets increasingly suspicious.”
Joe, an Ian follower commented:
“To all those commenting of this possibly being a form of “tax evasion” – Ian Balina is a UK Resident. The end of the Tax Year in the UK was back on the 5th April 2018. In addition, tax returns needed to have been filed/completed by January 31st, 2018. Just an FYI.”
Balina himself admitted few loopholes in his security which made way for the hack. His main email account was backed by an old college email and if Balina lost the password to his account, the college account was accessible to reset and use the main account.
The attack occurred a few days after Balina shared his portfolio on Twitter which reflects a possibility of attracting hackers to target him.
According to CCN, Balina stored the personal and public keys he needed to access his digital assets on popular cloud storage program Evernote, secured with password protection.
Balina recalls receiving a message about his college account being targeted, saying:
“I remember getting an email about it being compromised and tried to follow up with my college security to get it resolved, but wasn’t able to get it handled in a fast manner and gave up on it thinking it was just an old email.”
