Drake’s $300K Bitcoin bet against Argentina: “This could get Messi”

Rapper Drake placed a failed $300,000 wager in Bitcoin on Canada to defeat Argentina in the Copa America.

  • Drake made a $300,000 Bitcoin bet supporting Canada in Copa America 2024.
  • Daniel Regha criticized Drake’s bet as futile and predicted Argentina’s win.

As the 2024 Copa America tournament proceeded toward its finals, Canadian rapper Drake made headlines as he showed his support for his home country by placing a bet in crypto.

Posting on Instagram, Drake placed a hefty $300,000 wager in Bitcoin [BTC], accompanied by the caption “This could get Messi,” a playful nod to soccer icon Lionel Messi of Argentina.

It’s worth noting that Drake’s bet of $300,000 wasn’t explicitly stated as cryptocurrency but was made on Stake, an online casino platform where transactions typically involve crypto.

However, Nigerian social media personality Daniel Regha dismissed Drake’s bet as a waste of money, and stated,

“Canada can’t beat Argentina in the Copa America semi-finals; It’s almost an impossible prediction. What a way for Drake to lose money.”

Did the bet pay off?

This move occurred ahead of the anticipated semi-final match between Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Canada scheduled for 9th July.

As anticipated by many, Drake lost the bet as Argentina won the match against Canada. Needless to say, if Canada had won, Drake’s $300,000 bet would have paid out $2,880,000 to the team.

That being said, Drake making big bets on sports isn’t new. In the 2022 World Cup, he bet $1 million on Argentina to beat France, but Argentina only won in a penalty shootout after extra time.

This bet had costed Drake $1 million because Argentina didn’t win in regular time. Recently, he also lost another $1 million each betting on the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA Championship and the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup.

And, hence, an obvious question arises – Will Drake continue his betting spree despite losses, or learn from his mistakes?
