Ethereum for banks: What ETHGas’s advance transaction bookings offer

Reserving Ethereum capacity could help institutions plan transactions, with delivery terms and participating operators shaping the service’s usefulness.

Ethereum for banks: What ETHGas’s advance transaction bookings offer

ETHGas is selling banks and trading firms the possibility to reserve space in an Ethereum block beforehand. Its Institutional Blockspace offer aims to fulfil customer wishes on the choice of validators, as they settlet transactions on public network.

Booking space before sending a transaction

Ethereum handles its transactions in blocks. Each block has a limited capacity, and users pay fees to place their transactions.

The ETHGas facility includes a marketplace where purchasers can commit to purchasing processing capacity in the future [i.e., book a place in a future batch].

Its institutional offering will add controls for regulated businesses, including selecting eligible validators and screening for sanctions compliance. ETHGas sells it as way for institutions to “use public Ethereum with additional controls”.

It may help firms schedule their money transfers and trading activities if they can use such information. Furthermore, its economic value is based on whether the operator sticks to its promises.

The supply comes from participating operators

ETHGas needs validators willing to sell their future capacity.

In April, the company signed up  ether.fi , which committed to staking approx. $3B worth of ETH on its High Performance Staking Service for three years and gaining exclusive use of ETHGas’s preconfirmation platform during the term.

What happens when a booking is missed?

Buyer protection remains an important question.

The ETHGas documentation shows that some missed inclusion commitments will be compensated, but claims protection related to builder-initiated transactions does not extend to transactions sent directly.

Even when time and bandwidth are equal, contract details are still relevant to prospective clients.

Information on delivery obligations, compensation terms, and performance records would help those who want to use it see and decide if they see advance subscriptions as something that has value for them and can address their demands.

Final Summary

  • ETHGas allows for advanced booking of Ethereum transactions, and with controls meant for institutional users.
  • There has not been any public evidence that the banks have agreed to use and cover the costs of not using ETHGas, for instance.
