The BOJ and the Fed are set to have their meetings hours after each other.

Japan’s $8.6 trillion banking system just put XRP in the spotlight - Here's how!

Are global markets all set for a big shake-up?

Reports have stated that Japanese bonds are set to become more attractive, taking attention away from U.S offerings. In tandem, Japan’s crypto scene is also getting a big boost.

Here’s what you need to know.

Japan’s rate hike to add pressure to the markets?

The Bank of Japan is expected to raise interest rates to 1% on 16 June; that would be Japan’s highest rate level in 31 years. This could also potentially narrow the long-standing gap between U.S and Japanese bond yields.

For years, Japanese bonds offered very low returns, so many global investors preferred U.S Treasuries. However, if Japanese bonds become more attractive, some of that money could start moving back east.

This would push U.S bond yields higher, and make the competition heat up.

Here, the timing is worth noting. The BOJ’s meeting will be followed by a meeting of the U.S Federal Reserve on 17 June! That’s two major central bank decisions within 24 hours, which could keep the markets chaotic.

A new route for XRP

There’s another development that is bringing crypto into the same conversation. On 10 June, Japan’s SBI Shinsei Bank will allow customers to convert a part of their deposit interest into Ripple’s XRP [XRP].

This is important because Japan’s banking system holds roughly $8.6 trillion in deposits. Even with low interest rates, often below 0.5% for many accounts, the total interest paid across the system can still run into tens of billions annually.

SBI’s move will give a small slice of that interest flow a direct path into XRP. It won’t change the market overnight, but it might create a potential source of recurring demand.

Crypto still trails stocks

This is where the picture becomes more balanced. On one side, Japan’s banking system may create a new demand channel for XRP through interest conversions.

On the other, the crypto market is still lagging behind equities.

The S&P 500 has moved up and above 7,400, while the total crypto market cap was at $2.15 trillion at press time. That’s fairly below its previous peak.

So, SBI’s XRP move is important, but it comes at a time when crypto needs stronger inflows to catch up with stocks. For now though, the market remains selective.

Final Summary

  • Japan’s expected 1% rate hike could pull money towards Japanese bonds.
  • SBI Shinsei Bank’s will bring XRP interest conversion, but crypto still trails the S&P 500.
