Kraken crypto options set for Europe as exchange expands derivatives business

Kraken is targeting Europe for the next phase of its crypto options rollout, although regulatory confirmation and a firm launch date remain outstanding.

Kraken crypto options set for Europe as exchange expands derivatives business

Kraken plans to expand its recently launched Bitcoin [BTC] and Ethereum [ETH] options platform to eligible European clients later in 2026, marking the next step in the exchange’s push into regulated crypto derivatives.

The rollout could give professional traders another venue to hedge positions and manage portfolio risk. However, Kraken has yet to announce a launch date or specify which European jurisdictions will receive access first.

Kraken expands beyond spot and futures

Kraken launched European-style, cash-settled BTC/USD and ETH/USD options for eligible professional and institutional clients on July 16.

The contracts are available with weekly, monthly, quarterly and semi-annual expiries. At launch, trading is conducted through a request-for-quote [RFQ] system rather than a public order book.

Despite the name, European-style options refer to contracts that can only be exercised at expiry. The term does not indicate that the products are already available across Europe.

According to Kraken, the options platform is expected to expand to eligible European clients during the second half of 2026. The exchange also plans to introduce a central order book and broaden support for additional assets and regions over time.

Kraken has not yet published a country-by-country rollout schedule.

What does the expansion mean for traders?

The planned launch would strengthen Kraken’s position in Europe’s growing crypto derivatives market, where exchanges are increasingly competing to attract institutional and professional traders.

Unlike standalone derivatives platforms, Kraken’s options will operate alongside its existing spot and futures products through a single portfolio-margined wallet, allowing eligible clients to manage collateral more efficiently across different trading strategies.

The exchange also supports more than 30 collateral currencies, reducing the need for traders to move assets between separate accounts when opening or managing positions.

For institutions and active traders, this could simplify risk management while offering another regulated venue for crypto options trading.

Regulatory approvals support Kraken’s European strategy

Kraken’s derivatives expansion builds on its existing regulatory footprint in Europe.

Payward Europe Digital Solutions [CY] Limited holds Cyprus Investment Firm licence 342/17, according to the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. Kraken’s European website is listed among the firm’s approved domains.

Separately, Kraken says its broader European crypto business operates under a Markets in Crypto-Assets [MiCA] authorisation obtained through the Central Bank of Ireland.

Even so, those approvals do not mean the new options products are already available throughout Europe. Kraken has said the rollout remains planned for the second half of the year, with further regulatory confirmation and market availability still to come.

What comes next?

The next milestone will be confirmation of the launch date, eligible jurisdictions and the transition from the current RFQ model to a public order book.

Until then, Kraken’s options business remains an expansion plan rather than a fully deployed European service.

Final Summary

  • Kraken plans to expand its BTC and ETH options platform to eligible European clients later in 2026 as it grows its regulated derivatives business.
  • The exchange has yet to announce a launch date or identify which European markets will receive access first.
