Ledger unveils Atom crypto wallet with Android apps and tamper detection

Atom puts everyday apps and protected transaction approvals in one device as Ledger updates its investigation into altered hardware wallets.

Ledger unveils Atom crypto wallet with Android apps and tamper detection

On October 15, Ledger presented “Atom”, a phone-shaped crypto cold wallet that allows Android-based apps to run on a different system than the one required to authorize the transactions. Orders can be reserved now, and delivery should be scheduled in 2027.

The announcement comes as Ledger shares details about devices that have been tampered with and distributed via resellers in Southeast Asia. Atom promises additional protection against physical tampering.

Everyday apps, separate transaction approvals

According to the company, everyday apps run separately from the protected system that holds users’ private keys.

When a transaction needs approval, Ledger says its security system takes control of the screen. An illuminated indicator tells users they have entered this protected mode.

The idea is to let people verify what they are sanctioning, instead of relying solely on information that might be displayed by an ordinary app.

It says that there is also a physical switch for the camera and microphone to be switched off.

Ledger updates its account of the thefts

When AMBCrypto covered CryptoBillis allegations on October 9, the cause of the reported losses was still unconfirmed.

Ledger has given a more specific explanation of the attack. It says criminals may have bought genuine devices and inserted hidden components inside of them, then returned them into distribution channels through the network of resellers.

The components had been developed by these criminals to take the recovery phrases of users during registration. Anybody having that set of words can access the associated wallet.

Ledger claims its crypto hardware, working platform, and servers were safe from hacks. It has temporarily terminated its reseller and distributor sales channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.

Due to this development, Ledger says Atom comes with a protective shield to detect interference with its secure components.

Reservations open, but shipping comes later

Ledger says there will be a Founders Edition priced at $849; this is to reserve it with a completely refundable $100 deposit.

The product is not finished yet, and Ledger is saying some things, including pricing, may change before launch.

For now, Atom is Ledger’s proposed approach to combining everyday apps with hardware-based transaction approval.

Final Summary

  • Ledger introduced Atom, combining Android-based apps with separate crypto transaction approvals and claimed tamper protection.
  • Reservations require a refundable $100 deposit, with a special $849 price and delivery expected in 2027.
