Monero jumps 13% – Are XMR bulls paying more for a crowded trade?

More leverage could fuel Monero’s advance and amplify the consequences when momentum falters.

The privacy narrative could be attracting investor interest, with Monero [XMR] surging 13% over the past 24 hours. The gain extended its bullish momentum over recent weeks, as perpetual traders increased their involvement.

Retail activity appeared to play a growing role, potentially helping sustain the asset’s run in the near term.

Why are Monero traders betting on gains?

The rally coincided with increased bullish positioning in the XMR perpetual market, as traders anticipated further upside.

Between the 21st and 22nd of October, the OI-Weighted Funding Rate rose from 0.0022% to 0.0480%. That put the reading at roughly 21.8 times its starting level.

A positive Funding Rate means longs pay shorts, reflecting traders’ willingness to pay for bullish exposure. The sharp increase suggested stronger appetite for long positions, although it could also signal an increasingly crowded trade.

Meanwhile, Open Interest reached roughly $371 million after increasing by over $86 million.

Together, rising Open Interest and positive funding supported the bullish positioning picture. Sustaining that exposure, however, could become harder if price momentum faded.

Can retail traders keep XMR climbing?

The Whale-Retail Delta fell deeper into negative territory, suggesting retail activity had become more prominent relative to whale activity. That shift accompanied Monero’s advance, supporting the view that smaller traders were increasingly involved in the rally.

Their participation could help maintain momentum. Still, the indicator alone could not establish how long those traders would hold their positions.

Sentiment offered a more restrained bullish signal. CoinMarketCap’s Sentiment indicator stood at 1.64 on a scale from -10 to 10, indicating a modestly positive outlook.

There was optimism, but limited evidence of strong conviction from that reading alone.

If sentiment deteriorates, bullish positioning could become harder to sustain, particularly while longs pay elevated funding costs.

Where could Monero face a pullback?

The two-week Liquidation Heatmap showed more extensive liquidation clusters below XMR’s latest price, although some remained overhead.

These clusters represent estimated levels where leveraged positions could face liquidation if the price reaches them.

The concentrations below highlighted potential downside liquidation zones. Reaching them could intensify selling through forced closures of long positions.

However, their presence alone did not establish that a decline would follow. A pullback would still require weakening demand or increased selling pressure.

For now, bullish momentum could support further gains. The test would come if that momentum slowed while leveraged exposure remained elevated.

Final Summary

  • Monero gained 13% as its OI-Weighted Funding Rate reached 0.0480% and Open Interest climbed to roughly $371 million.
  • Retail activity strengthened, while liquidation clusters below the price highlighted potential risks if bullish momentum weakened.
