Sam Bankman-Fried appears in DOJ clemency database with pending pardon request

Sam Bankman-Fried appears to have a pending clemency case in the U.S. Department of Justice’s pardon database, according to records reviewed on Monday.

The database entry lists Bankman-Fried under clemency case number P338490 with the status marked as “Pending.” The filing describes the requested relief as a “Pardon after Completion of Sentence.”

The former FTX CEO is currently serving a 25-year federal prison sentence after being convicted in one of the largest financial fraud cases in crypto history.

The DOJ entry does not indicate that a pardon has been approved or is under active consideration by the White House. Clemency applications can remain pending for years without action.

Filing comes amid growing political attention around crypto pardons

The filing nevertheless arrives at a politically sensitive moment for the crypto industry, particularly after recent controversy surrounding the pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.

Zhao previously pleaded guilty to anti-money laundering compliance failures tied to Binance’s operations, prompting criticism from lawmakers and ethics groups after his pardon became public.

A potential pardon discussion involving Bankman-Fried could generate even stronger backlash, given the scale of the FTX collapse and the billions in customer losses tied to the case.

Unlike Zhao’s case, Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud-related charges connected to the misuse of customer funds.

Federal prosecutors accused the former executive of orchestrating schemes that diverted billions of dollars from FTX customers and investors before the exchange collapsed in November 2022.

Trump previously distanced himself from SBF pardon discussions

Reports earlier this year suggested that some figures from the crypto and political worlds had explored the possibility of seeking clemency for Bankman-Fried.

However, prior reports also indicated the White House had shown little interest in publicly engaging with the idea.

The newly surfaced DOJ filing does not identify who submitted the clemency request or whether it was filed directly by Bankman-Fried, legal representatives, or outside supporters.

Filing may reignite debate around crypto accountability

The appearance of the clemency case is likely to reignite debate over accountability in the crypto sector, particularly as the industry aggressively pushes for broader regulatory legitimacy in Washington.

FTX remains one of the defining failures of the last crypto cycle and continues to shape public and political perceptions of digital asset markets.

Because of that, any discussion surrounding clemency for Bankman-Fried is likely to attract significantly more scrutiny than previous crypto-related pardon controversies.
