Tether posts $1.5B Q3 profit – Can USDT’s $7.9B buffer withstand market panic?
Will Tether's push to fight scams, human trafficking and illicit funds get it off regulatory scrutiny?
Tether has doubled its reserve buffer to $7.95 billion in Q3, up from Q2’s $4.1 billion, strengthening its position to handle massive USDT redemptions during panic events.
According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, the current geopolitical landscape calls for such preparedness.
Maintaining nearly $8.0 billion in excess reserves gives us a strong foundation for that work, with the liquidity to meet redemptions and the financial strength to support infrastructure people can rely on amidst the chaotic geopolitical environment we live in.
The $3.85 billion surge was mainly unrealized paper gain from its Bitcoin and gold holdings, which can be erased if the market tanks. In Q3, Bitcoin’s rebound from $58K to over $83K lifted Tether’s Bitcoin holdings (100,000 BTC) value by $2.47 billion.
Although it shed its physical gold holdings by 3.4 metric tonnes, gold also rallied by nearly 4% in Q3. The gold rally offered another $700 million in value appreciation, and the rest of the reserve capital was funneled from Tether’s other operations.
That said, the stablecoin issuer made $1.5 billion in net profits, which is similar to the gains made in Q2. In fact, even in Q1 2026, it made $1.5 billion, mostly from interest income from U.S. Treasury bonds used as backing for USDT collateral ($135 billion).
In short, the stablecoin issuer has made $4.5 billion so far this year. If the trend persists, it will make a total of $6B by the end of 2026, nearly the same as the stolen funds from the Binance exchange.
Tether USDT users hit a record high
Tether’s USDT closed Q3 with about $183 billion in market cap, still making it the largest stablecoin. However, it dipped slightly by 0.5% in Q3, but has seen a sharp drop of 2% in Q3, partly driven by the Binance hack.
However, USDT users increased by 6% in Q3 and hit a record 727 million users.

That said, the issuer also faced some regulatory scrutiny in Q3. The US Congress pushed for more responsibility for illicit Iranian capital flows and transparency on its relationship with certain figures in the Trump administration.
To defend itself, Tether has actively increased its freezing spree of USDT tied to sanctioned entities. In fact, it became a founding partner of FASE Foundation, a new entity aimed at fighting scams and supporting trafficking survivors.
It’s unclear whether this will be enough to shake off regulatory scrutiny into Q4, especially under a Democrat-controlled Congress.
Final Summary
- Tether made $1.5 billion in profits in Q3, bringing 2026 gains to $4.5 billion.
- The issuer also doubled its reserve buffer to $8 billion, citing a ‘chaotic geopolitical environment.’
