The ETH divide: Tom Lee’s ‘$5K Ethereum’ call meets $542M in ETF outflows
Ethereum’s path to $5k looks increasingly uncertain as Foundation sales and risk-off sentiment challenge market optimism.
As Q4 kicks off, price forecasts for cryptocurrencies are growing more optimistic. The CEO of BitMine Research, Tom Lee, expects to see $5000 ETH by the end of the year.
Bitmine has passed the threshold of 6 million ETH in terms of total treasury reserves, demonstrating the importance of the company’s Ethereum bet. Adding to the optimism, BMNR stock grew by more than 70% quarterly.
Given this context, bullish speculation on ETH is intensifying. As AMBCrypto recently reported, ETH’s long positions on Bitfinex have reached their highest level in four years, while the Long/Short Ratio hit a weekly peak of 1.12, suggesting a clear bullish bias.
Adding to the momentum, another trader has now opened a $43.4 million ETH long with 25x leverage, entering at around $2,500.

Technically, with ETH rising from the trader’s entry price of $2,543 to $2,560, the $43.4 million leveraged long position is sitting on an estimated $289,800 in unrealized profit. This equates to roughly a 16.7% return on the estimated margin at 25x leverage, before fees and funding costs.
From a position perspective, that’s a 17% return from merely a 0.67% ETH price move.
In essence, this demonstrates the leverage’s potential to magnify gains. So, with Tom Lee eyeing $5,000 ETH by year-end, the bullish outlook could only fuel more long-position momentum as traders bet on further upside.
The key question, however, is whether this bullish momentum in the derivatives helps Ethereum [ETH] push toward $5,000.
Ethereum’s $5k narrative faces a reality check
Tom Lee’s $5k prediction is getting challenged by the bearish market dynamics.
To start with, Spot ETH ETFs reported more than $542 million in net outflows over the past week, marking their worst weekly performance since January, when outflows hit $611 million across five trading days.
It is worth mentioning that the bullish scenario for Ethereum may struggle in the face of institutional selling pressure, thereby challenging Tom Lee’s 5,000 ETH target.
One thing that could be contributing to the selling pressure is the Ethereum Foundation itself. As the post below shows, two wallets associated with the Foundation deposited 4,393 ETH worth $11.13 million into Kraken around five hours ago.
The key takeaway? These wallets received 59,751 ETH from the Foundation about 10 years ago, when ETH was trading at just $0.90.

In essence, concerns about ETH ETFs losing bullish momentum don’t seem far-fetched.
With increased market volatility, growing bearish pressure on Bitcoin, and the potential for selling pressure from the Ethereum Foundation, reaching Tom Lee’s $5,000 ETH target seems increasingly unlikely in the present market environment.
In this context, the increasing FOMO in the Ethereum derivatives market is another risk factor to consider. As traders continue to open leveraged long positions, ETH becomes increasingly susceptible to a long squeeze down, creating additional downward pressure on the price and making it harder to achieve bullish targets.
Final Summary
- Traders remain optimistic about Ethereum reaching $5,000.
- ETF outflows and leveraged longs could put pressure on ETH’s price.
