Security and data privacy play a crucial role in current times. Decentralized or Centralized, both spaces equally require these attributes, mainly to curb malicious activities within its spectrum.

Decentralized identity software firm Spruce aims to introduce its vision to make data and privacy decentralized. This proposal received a lot of traction within the community. Moreover, The Ethereum Foundation (EF) and Ethereum Name Service (ENS) supported this vision for a secure sign-in using Ethereum.

EF and ENS submitted a Request for Proposals in July, encouraging developers and software firms to propose a sign-in package using Oauth — an open standard for access delegation. Fast forward the latest announcement by Spruce – its official blog mentioned,

“We are excited to announce that Spruce’s proposal has been selected as the winner. We have already begun delivery on the best practices survey, user research, specification draft, and reference implementation.”

It’s important to note that login experiences in the current scenario rely on accounts controlled by centralized identity providers. For instance Google, Facebook, and Apple. Now, with this development, the firm aims to give users control of their own online identities. Ergo, offering an alternative route.

Significance

Needless to say, the Ethereum ecosystem incorporates tens of millions of monthly active wallet users signing with their cryptographic keys for various purposes. Such as financial transactions, community governance, and others. Meanwhile, the abovementioned blog stated further,

“The security of these wallets has been proven across billions of dollars of digital assets at stake — not theoretical security, but real tests in production. These secure wallets can also be used to sign in to Web2 services.”

At press time, Ethereum active addresses stood at 904.405k.

Advantages

Spruce aims to work with ENS and the Ethereum Foundation to ensure that the solution is compatible with existing standards used throughout the Ethereum ecosystem. Moreover, the blog noted,

“…the final result will be friendly to implementers while remaining vendor-neutral…By standardizing this workflow, millions of Ethereum users will be able to use a digital identity that they fully control to seamlessly access the web.”

The Ethereum blockchain has seen an immense amount of development on its platform. Of late, crypto payments and identity management platform Numio developed built an app on Ethereum. It offer data privacy, and allows users to choose the level of security they need, whilst using the app.
