Gemini Trust Company [Gemini] is a digital currency exchange, was founded in 2014, by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Gemini is now hiring ‘institutional trading executives’, a trend that most cryptocurrency exchanges are now following. They recently hired Robert Cornish of the New York Stock Exchange [NYSE] to serve as its first Chief Technology Officer [CTO].
The Winklevoss twins are American rowers and Internet entrepreneurs also famously known as ‘first Bitcoin billionaires’. In April 2013, the Winklevoss twins together held $11 million in Bitcoin. That holding grew to be worth more than $1 billion in December 2017 as the price of one coin surpassed $11,700. The Times reports Cameron and Tyler sold a portion of their coins to launch Gemini.
Cornish managed ‘Pillar’, the project aimed at renovating the NYSE’s famous ‘Big Board’ and its ‘outdated electronic trading platforms’. He served for over ten years at the ‘International Securities Exchange’ [ISE], which is the first all-electronic U.S. options exchange and later became the Chief Information Officer. He left ISE when it was acquired by NASDAQ Inc.
While speaking to CNBC about Cornish, he also mentions his lasting belief in Bitcoin. He says:
“Our belief and thesis have stayed the same … we have conviction, and we keep pointing towards the north star and our goal”
Gemini’s CEO, Tyler Winklevoss said about Cornish:
“He will ensure that Gemini continues to deliver the best platform experience to our customers possible and set the standards of excellence for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole. Rob is globally recognized for his abilities in leading high-performing engineering teams, his expertise in exchange and matching-engine architecture, and running high-throughput platforms that are both secure and resilient.”
Gemini aims to ‘build the future of money’ by bridging the cryptocurrency with that of traditional finance. Cornish comes from the traditional market and so the team believes that he can help them achieve this aim.
Recently, the US-based cryptocurrency exchange Kraken hired Mary Beth Buchanan who was the former United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, to serve as their general legal counsel.
