Bitcoin whales add 88,987 BTC – So why are traders buying protection?

Were whales buying into temporary weakness, or would their conviction face a longer wait below resistance?

Bitcoin holders with 10–10,000 BTC accumulated 88,987 BTC over the past month, lifting their holdings to a six-month high.

According to Santiment’s X post, these wallets expanded their collective balances beyond 13.69 million BTC.

Accumulation began around the 19th of September and continued through Bitcoin’s latest price fluctuations.

Santiment highlighted the historical alignment between changes in this cohort’s holdings and broader Bitcoin price trends.

These holders kept increasing their exposure, although Bitcoin struggled to establish a convincing recovery around $82,000. Their growing balances raised a question: What was keeping traders cautious while large holders bought?

Why were Bitcoin options traders paying for protection?

Bitcoin’s options market reflected unusually subdued volatility expectations.

CryptoQuant’s community analysis showed that Deribit’s DVOL Index closed the 19th of October at 37.33, below 92% of daily readings since March 2021.

Meanwhile, 30-day Realized Volatility stood at 28.84, approximately 8.5 points below the implied reading.

Options therefore priced larger fluctuations than Bitcoin had recently experienced, even with expectations near the historical range’s lower end.

Yet traders still paid more for downside protection. November’s 25-Delta Risk Reversal stood at -3.19, indicating higher implied volatility for puts than comparable calls.

Quiet trading conditions had left room for caution.

Bullish derivatives bets face mounting liquidation pressure

By contrast, Bitcoin’s broader derivatives market reflected expanded trading activity despite subdued options volatility.

According to CoinGlass, the token’s derivatives volume surged 12.42% to $48.31 billion, while open interest climbed 0.15% to $52.87 billion at the time of reporting.

Additionally, the options volume had also surged 30.44% to $4.15 billion, alongside $39.46 billion in options open interest.

Also noteworthy, Binance’s top traders maintained a bullish bias despite Bitcoin’s uncertain price direction, with their Long/Short ratio at 1.7739, as the corresponding positions ratio stood at 1.792.

Furthermore, liquidations, on the other hand, revealed greater pressure on the leveraged buyers, with long liquidations reaching $30.79 million, compared to $13.68 million in short liquidations.

The divergence suggested that the bullish positioning among the top traders had not prevented substantial losses across leveraged long positions.

What does Bitcoin’s price chart reveal?

A look at the daily technical structure highlighted Bitcoin [BTC] standing around $82,033 after pulling back from the $87,379 resistance zone. This left its recent price recovery attempts under pressure.

Subsequently, BTC price consolidated around the $81,500 support region, with repeated tests highlighting the level’s significance.

Here, it is also worth noting that BTC remained below the $83,782 resistance as well as the Bollinger Bands’ middle line around $83,231.

Notably on the charts, the narrowing Bollinger Bands suggested declining price volatility, which aligned with subdued expectations across the token’s options market.

Besides, the 50-day EMA meanwhile sat around $80,643, below the crucial immediate support region.

Even though Bitcoin remained above this average, its inability to reclaim the $83,782 resistance continued to limit recovery attempts.

Overall, the whale accumulation reinforced Bitcoin’s longer-term price picture, but the technical structure still favored caution below the $83,782 resistance.
