Chainalysis sues U.S. government over TRM Labs contract – Here’s why
Could Chainalysis succeed in getting the TRM Labs contract overturned?
Chainalysis Government Solutions has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government in the Court of Federal Claims. Chainalysis argues that ICE and the Department of Homeland Security circumvented standard competition laws to give rival TRM Labs an exclusive procurement contract.
Though the case is now moving more quickly toward its resolution, it all started with an initial phone conference on the 30th of July, 2026.
The matter in a nutshell
Chainalysis contends that the government’s own record shows that its decision was legally flawed and that the court ought to rule in its favor. However, according to the government, they have made the right decision, and it should be enforced. Of that, now TRM Labs is also standing in favor of the U.S. governemnt.
For background, in 2025, ICE used blockchain-investigation tools from both Chainalysis and TRM Labs, each of which was identified as the only viable vendor for particular requirements in separate notices. Additionally, in September 2025, ICE gave Chainalysis an order worth $3.57 million.
Going forward, DHS/ICE took action in January 2026 to raise the limits of current contracts with both companies without holding a competitive bidding process. Moreover, Chainalysis is now contesting the government’s ruling regarding TRM Labs, claiming the procedure unjustly favored its competitor.
What’s ahead?
That said, by the 21st of August, the government and TRM Labs are required to reply to Chainalysis and submit their own cross-motions for judgment. Then Chainalysis will have four days until the 26th of August to address those points and provide a response supporting its own motion.
Lastly, TRM Labs and the government have until the 31st of August to submit their responses. And then finally, oral arguments and the joint appendix will take place on the 1st of September and the 2nd of September, respectively.
The lawsuit added,
The government has requested a decision by September 10, 2026.
All in all, Chainalysis wants to stop the arrangement.
Therefore, neither the government nor TRM Labs has won the case thus far, nor has Chainalysis. The underlying merits of the case have also not yet been decided by Judge Stephen Sidney Schwartz. So far, Judge Schwartz has only outlined the procedural steps for resolution.
Final Summary
- What started as a conference call has now turned into a legal dispute between Chainalysis and the U.S. government supported by TRM Labs.
- Judge Stephen Sidney Schwartz has not come to any conclusion so far but has laid down the procedure to solve the conflict.
