Dogecoin faces 40x short bet – Is DOGE setting up a bear trap?
DOGE faces a key test as aggressive shorts pile in. However, bullish signals hint at a possible bear trap.
Aggressive bets are stacking up as major high-cap assets retrace toward key support zones.
Currently, Dogecoin [DOGE] is showing this setup in real time. A trader recently opened a massive 40x short on DOGE, with an entry price at $0.071 and liquidation around $0.07, yielding over 40% in profit. This is adding more pressure to a key support zone that DOGE has been holding for nearly two months.
And if we look at DOGE’s previous monthly cycles, this bet doesn’t look completely random. As the chart below highlights, DOGE spent over four months consolidating around the $0.08 level. However, a 28%+ correction in June broke that structure, triggering massive long squeezes and pushing DOGE to a more than two-year low as capitulation intensified.

Naturally, the question is whether Dogecoin is about to repeat the same playbook heading deeper into Q3.
Notably, the DOGE/BTC ratio looks set to close August with another lower low, showing little sign of rotation back into the memecoin. Against this backdrop, the rising short leverage on DOGE looks pretty strategic, especially with the $0.07 support now coming under pressure.
That said, the bulls don’t seem to be playing along. According to CoinGlass data, DOGE’s 24-hour Long/Short Ratio has climbed to a multi-month high of 1.18, showing that traders are still leaning heavily toward the long side. That puts Dogecoin in a textbook tug-of-war, with one big question now taking center stage: Are these bulls pricing in something the broader market hasn’t seen yet?
DOGE faces a bear trap setup as bulls push back
Despite DOGE’s weak technical setup, the broader memecoin market is starting to pick up.
According to CoinMarketCap data, trading volume across the memecoin market is up 22% over the past 24 hours, pointing to a clear pickup in risk appetite. Meanwhile, AI token volume has dropped 11%, suggesting capital is still flowing more heavily into memecoins. That keeps the broader DOGE thesis interesting.
Notably, the timing of these flows couldn’t be better. As the chart below shows, Dogecoin dominance (DOGE.D) has slipped below the 0.5% mark, falling back to levels last seen during the 2020-21 cycle. These levels previously marked strong rebounds for memecoins, which makes the current setup worth watching as capital continues to rotate into the sector.

Against this backdrop, the bullish long/short ratio doesn’t look random.
DOGE has been chopping in a tight range for over two months, while its dominance is back at key support and capital continues to flow into memecoins. If these trends hold, the setup could quickly turn into a bear trap, making that 40x DOGE short a high-risk bet.
From there, a short squeeze could quickly send DOGE toward $0.075 once the broader market shifts back into risk-on mode.
