August was crypto’s best month, but here are the bearish signs you probably missed!

Profit-taking and lower U.S demand mean it may not hold.

August was crypto's best month, but here are the bearish signs you probably missed!

August was crypto’s best month this year. However, as with most things, all that glitters isn’t gold.

There’s a lot that simply doesn’t show up on a price chart.

Crypto in August 2026

Bitcoin closed August up 24.5%! That’s one of its strongest monthly runs this year.

However, as per data from CryptoRank, the combined market cap of the top-100 altcoins actually grew faster than Bitcoin, up 26.5%. Also, it wasn’t just a few names carrying the load.

The average altcoin gained by 24.5%. Even stripped of the outliers, these tokens were still up a solid 17.1%. For once, smaller and mid-sized tokens weren’t just riding Bitcoin’s coattails.

Beyond just the prices

DeFi lending also had its own hero moment in the month gone by.

Active loans across major protocols went up from $20.1B in June to $26.1B in August. They grew by 30% in just two months!

Aave [AAVE] alone made up more than half ($12.5B). Morpho [MORPHO] and Spark [SPK] rounded out the next biggest slices.

Simply put, money is being put to work. With activity picking up, it’s not just the prices flying high on buzz.

It’s not all shiny…

Bitcoin ran from about $63K to $81.5K in two weeks flat. Naturally, a lot of long-term holders decided that was the cue to exit.

Profit-taking spiked twice in a single week, among the heaviest sell-off days all year outside the January crash. And, it hasn’t really stopped since.

Meanwhile, U.S demand turned positive for a couple of days late in the month, then disappeared like it never happened.

Funding rates hit a yearly high around the same time. This implied that traders have been clearly leaning on leverage.

All this, makes for a fragile rally.

Final Summary

  • Crypto had its best month YTD in August!
  • However, due to profit-taking and decreasing U.S demand, the rally is a lot more fragile than it looks.
