EMX, a derivatives exchange that intends to list both traditional and cryptocurrency futures, announced the addition of two key hires; Shehzad Hassam as Head of Asia Operations, and Jim Falvey as Chief Regulatory Officer and General Counsel. Hassam is the first employee in Hong Kong, the firm’s Asian headquarters.
Hassam was most recently at BitMEX, where he started as Head of Support before taking on further responsibilities within the organization. Prior to that, he spent over 14 years in financial services and operations at BNP Paribas, Bank of New York, Cantor Fitzgerald and Tullet Prebon. As a member of EMX’s management team, Hassam will oversee the day-to-day operations of EMX’s Hong Kong office, lead the company’s business development efforts in Asia, and be responsible for driving EMX’s growth and liquidity within the region.
Falvey has over 28 years of experience in the exchange sector, financial services, and cryptocurrencies. Prior to joining EMX, he was the co-founder of two cryptocurrency startups, and previously was General Counsel for ICE, General Counsel for the US Futures Exchange, and Director, Associate Counsel at CME Group. In addition, Falvey served as an appointed member of the Technology Advisory Committee for the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission [CFTC]. In his new capacity, he will oversee EMX’s regulatory and compliance functions, all legal aspects of the company, and will assume an active role in liaising with regulators in a bid to drive institutional cryptocurrency adoption.
Jim Bai, founder, and CEO of EMX said,

“Building a talented team is essential to creating a secure, transparent, and customer-focused exchange. We’re thrilled that both Jim and Shehzad have decided to join us in our next phase of growth”

The recent expansion increases the EMX team to 14. The company plans to open a customer service center and expand its engineering team to support the launch of the exchange. The exchange will launch in jurisdictions outside the United States in early 2019.
