Incorporating Practicality into the Classroom

From elementary school through high school, children are required to learn about everything from colors and numbers to algebra and physics. State educational boards create curriculums that will produce well-rounded individuals who are great contributors to society. However, there’s a common complaint across the board. It doesn’t matter if you went to school in California or in Maine, there are tons of adults who wish they had learned more relatable and practical skills while they were in school.

Sure, they might know how to solve a quadratic equation, but the thought of doing their taxes is overwhelmingly hard. They might know how to be a good employee, but they don’t understand the value of building a small business. Truthfully, more students need to experience the benefits of life skills and lessons within the classroom in a number of ways. In addition to financial literacy, there are many practical concepts a student can learn from a holistic teaching method.

Employable Skill Set

College is one of the most expensive investments a person can make. When a young adult goes to college, they don’t have a full understanding of what it means to work in the world. They’ve been under their parents’ roof for the almost two decades. As a result, their true understanding of an employable skill set might not be the most accurate. There are many people who invest hundreds of thousands of dollars on degrees that they won’t be able to actively use once they graduate. In this case, it’s better to invest in education at a trade school.

Employable skill sets are important because a person needs money to pay the bills. While it is always great to earn degrees, it’s important to look at the practicality of that degree. Will it provide an income after graduation? If it won’t provide an income immediately, is there an innate skill set that can provide an income in the meantime? For some creative careers, there might be a lull at first. In some careers, you have to work odd jobs in the beginning. That “big break” is a factor. This is why it’s so essential for students to learn employable skills that they can use once they graduate from high school. Whether they learn how to build websites and write code or become entrepreneurs who use dropshipping to provide products to the masses, reliable skills are essential for a person’s ability to provide and thrive on their own terms.

Discipline

There are so many diversions that can take over a person’s life if they don’t practice the habit of maintaining discipline. Discipline is essential if you’d like to experience long-term success in any facet of your life. During the formative years, parents and caretakers are there to make sure a child stays on task with what they need to do. However, if there’s no level of structure or discipline involved, it’s going to be hard for that child to develop into an adult who can enter the world with a disciplined spirit. Since a child spends the majority of their formative years in the classroom, it would be excellent for teachers and staff to develop educational curriculums surrounding soft skills like being disciplined.

When a person is disciplined, they’ll be able to keep a job because they’re reliable, dependable and will get the work done. There are too many employees who are merely doing the bare minimum so that they won’t get fired. At the core, a lack of discipline is one of the common issues. No one wants to employ an undisciplined employee. That’s one of the most deplorable traits a person can exhibit. However, no one wants to admit that they don’t have the discipline they should have. Instead of normalizing the behavior, it’s time to work from the early years to make sure that an undisciplined behavior doesn’t manifest in children as they develop into adults. While education might start at home, it can be reinforced through classroom curriculums and messaging.

Mental Health

So many people are suffering from mental health issues. Unfortunately, when it comes to the mind, a lot of people don’t know something is wrong. They might feel a little different, but the mind is a powerful component to reason with. Plus, if someone is dealing with mental illness, the resources aren’t as abundant as they are for someone who is dealing with a disease like cancer. This is why it’s so important for children to learn about how to maintain their mental clarity and sanity. There’s nothing wrong with going to see a therapist. In fact, this practice needs to be as normal as it is for people to go to the gym. It’s a matter of protecting your greatest asset. If you don’t have your mind, it is almost impossible to function at an optimal level.
