YFI technical analysis: Can the recent surge be sustained?

YFI’s ups and downs have led to its widespread interest. The price movements present a compelling narrative over the past year, laying a foundation for an insightful Yearn.finance price prediction for 2024. 

The initial rejection at the highest time frame resistance of $10,012 signaled a bearish phase. This led to a downtrend where the price plummeted below $8,254 towards the end of April. This descent was momentarily arrested at a critical support level of $5,072 in June, marking the lowest level for the price. 

Attempts to revert to an uptrend were made as the price momentarily breached the $6,963 resistance level between the end of June and July. Despite these efforts, the altcoin was unable to sustain above this level due to increased selling pressure, returning to its lowest support level by mid-August.

The narrative took a turn in mid-October when a bullish rally sought to rejuvenate YFI's market position. This momentum continued into November, propelling the price above previous resistance levels and culminating in a retest of the $10,012 mark mid-month. 

This period marked a significant surge in the token's value, with an almost 170% increase in price. A detailed examination of the futures data revealed a 40% rise in open interest. This hinted at the opening of short positions as a possible catalyst for this movement. 
 

Nonetheless, the token quickly erased 43% of its gains. The sell-off erased over $300 million in market capitalization from the gains, as reported by CoinMarketCap. This significant downturn sparked a wave of fear, uncertainty, and doubt within the cryptocurrency community.
 

Despite this, bulls attempted to maintain the support level at $8,254, yet the price dipped below this threshold. Nonetheless, the $6,963 support level was defended robustly, preventing further declines.

A subsequent effort to challenge the high resistance level was observed in February, culminating in the asset reaching this resistance once more in March. However, this attempt mirrored past patterns, resulting in the asset trading at $8,319 at the time of writing.

If the bulls manage to sustain strong buying pressure in the upcoming period, there's a significant potential for the price of YFI to rise sharply, possibly reaching as high as $18,000. This upward trajectory could even push the valuation towards the $20,000 mark, placing it within a realistic range of achievement for the asset. However, it's important to note that achieving this level could lead to a retracement.

On the other side of the market spectrum, if the current support level fails to hold, the bulls might find themselves relying on $6,963 to prevent further declines. A break below it would signify a substantial shift in market dynamics, effectively tilting the balance in favor of bears and potentially initiating a more extended downtrend.

YFI's 2024 roadmap: Key indicators to watch and trade

• Throughout the majority of the period analyzed, trading volume remained low. Moreover, a notable increase in mid-November was observed. 
• Yet, this recovery diminished as the price fell. A modest uptick was observed again in mid-February, though it did not reach the levels seen in November.
• Looking at the Directional Movement Index (DMI), from May to the end of October, the -DI remained dominant over the +DI and the ADX line. In August, the ADX line began to ascend and eventually crossed above the +DI line towards the month's end.
• By the end of October, the -DI began to descend, while the +DI experienced a significant rise, becoming dominant over both the ADX and -DI lines. Concurrently, the ADX itself also started to show a slight increase.
• In January, the situation evolved as the ADX moved above the +DI line, highlighting a shift in market momentum. At the time of writing, the indicators stood at +DI at 27.0062, -DI at 13.2712, and ADX at 41.4489. This pointed to a strong bullish market.
• The 50-week Exponential Moving Average (EMA) acted as a significant barrier above the price until November. The 20 EMA also served as notable resistance after the price dropped below it towards the end of April, persisting until November. 
• As YFI shed some of its gains in late 2023, the price dropped below the 50 EMA in January and briefly below the 20 EMA towards the end of the month. However, this was not sustained as the price reclaimed its position over both EMAs by February.
• A golden cross occurred in March. This was a clear bullish signal indicating potential upward movement. However, towards the end of the analyzed period, the price began to trend closer to these EMAs. The convergence could lead to a breakout or breakdown, depending on broader market sentiment and upcoming events.
